Oblong 4to (232 x 298mm.), 33 photographs, mounted on card, recto only, numbered and with printed caption on the mount, contemporary black half morocco over blue cloth, upper cover titled in gilt, spine gilt, gilt edges, images somewhat faded, rather spotted and stained (the mounts more than the images), some mounts splitting, cloth discoloured, slightly rubbed

Catalogue Note

This album records the establishment of the Ashanti Goldfields Corporation goldmine at Obuasi in the southern Gold Coast (now Ghana), from 1 January 1898 to around October. The images show the development of the mining operations, including forest clearing, shaft digging, the camp, building construction and the start of mechanisation. There are also images of the native village and people and members of the European corporation including Edwin Arthur Cade (managing director), John Daw (mining engineer), Mr Gordon and the expedition doctor.
