Catalogue Note

A rare collection of geological models, dedicated to William Buckland, who wrote the first full account of a fossil dinosaur. Sopwith's models feature in Charles Lyell's The Student's Elements of Geology (editions from 1874). Extant sets seem to vary in their make-up, with twelve pieces appearing standard (cf. the set at the Whipple Museum of the History of Science, Cambridge University). The present set has fourteen.
