Description

  • An Account of divers Choice Remarks... taken in a journey through the Low-Countries, France, Italy, and part of Spain; with the isles of Sicily and Malta. As also, a Voyage to the Levant. Exon [i.e. Exeter]: printed by Sam. Farley, and sold by Charles Yeo and Philip Bishop, 1701
First edition, folio (315 x 193mm.), 2 engraved plates, contemporary panelled calf, Caleb Lowdham's copy, with first and last names added in manuscript at foot of gatherings C and L, [cf. Atabey 1285 and Blackmer 1727 (see footnote, above); not in Cobham-Jeffery or Weber], binding somewhat worn (lower cover wormed), old rebacking

Catalogue Note

Veryard's account includes descriptions of Cyprus, the Holy Land, Egypt, Babylon, Baalbek, Lebanon, Constantinople, Greece and numerous Greek islands. Pages 315-320 give an account of the practices and history of Islam.

Blackmer and Atabey record only a London edition of this work, stating "first and apparently only edition, uncommon" (Atabey). All the copies of this work recorded at auction by ABPC have been the London issue and this Exeter issue seems rarer, though identical in all but imprint. The author was a physician who lived in Plymtree, Devon, a few miles from Exeter.
