Catalogue Note

A good copy of the rare English translation of this work. "This is an important work both for its scope and the amount of information it provides, particularly on the Aegean islands" (Blackmer).

Plate no.9 is not present, a note in the plate list stating: "This plate requiring particular care in the execution, is not yet finished; it will be delivered with those which refer to the Travels in Egypt". Indeed the plate list itself is described as "(first delivery)". The third part, or volume, of this work, which would have been the section on Travels in Egypt [and Persia], appears never to have been published. The only 'complete' copy recorded on ABPC in over 30 years was the Hopkirk copy (sale in these rooms, lot 1020, 13-14 Oct. 1998), similarly without plate no.9 and the title to vol.2.
