Small 4to (155 x 110mm.), engraved throughout, pictorial title, one leaf containing preface and index, 50 maps, hand-coloured in outline within yellow wash borders, contemporary calf, manuscript ownership inscription on flyleaf "George Evelyn March 15 1756", [Chubb CXCIII; Hodson 210], occasional soiling, one or two small tears at fold, binding slightly worn
Catalogue Note
This small and attractive atlas was first published in twelve weekly parts, commencing in November 1748, by a consortium of nine publishers. No copy of this version survives, and it seems likely that Jefferys and Kitchin took over the project at an early date. The atlas proved popular, running to six editions, with various changes and additions, the last being in 1787.
