Catalogue Note
"The first systematic survey of British coastal waters and the first marine atlas of British waters engraved from original surveys" (Verner).
This would appear, on the basis of Verner's descriptions, to have originally been what he described as a "standard" copy of this edition, but the atlas seems to have been rebound, and re-guarded, slightly later in the century, at which time a later printing (and state) of the Scilly Isles chart, with the additional descriptive letterpress text signed by Abraham Tovey, was substituted for the 1723 printing; as such it was a superior version of the chart.
