Catalogue Note

According to Leloup (1994: 154), Komakan ancestor figures were "probably used in the rain rites. These very ancient pieces are contemporaries of the Tellem and, although they share the same rites and their general style resembles the Tellem (schematically rendered body and raised arms), the scarifications [present on many Komakan statues] show that they are not Tellem sculptures."
