Catalogue Note

Waller Hugh Paton, brother of Sir Joseph Noel Paton, was born in Wooers-Alley, Dunfirmline and gained his formative artistic training from John Houston R.S.A. He is hailed as the first Scottish painter to paint a complete picture in the open air, with his favourite subjects being the dramatic mountainous scenery of Perthshire, Aberdeenshire and most notably Arran, particularly at sunset as in the present work. Summer Evening at Penlester, Arran is a fine example of the artist's mature style showing much of the Pre-Raphaelite influence, colouring and detail that is observed in his best work of this period.
