Wooden pedestal base with some scratches and nicks to surface. Formerly with a green patina. This bronze has been later painted in black. The black paint has been applied in places with a rather thick coat resulting in stronger black areas than others and visible brush strokes. The original patina is visible in many places where the black paint has worn off (most noticeably the top of shoulders, back of arms, tops of legs, tip of nose and forehead). There are many scratches throughout consistent with age and handling. Pitting from casting is still visible, mostly to the top of the sitter's shoulder. Visible casting seam on his right leg. The tip of the wing on his left foot is broken off. There are four areas to his lower back with extensive wear, now showing the natural bronze color.

The bronze figure of the Seated Hermes was discovered at the Villa dei Papiri in the mid-18th century. It is now in the National Archaeological Museum in Naples.
