Catalogue Note
In the present work, Engonopoulos conjures up a thought-provoking scene in juxtaposing a quintessential example of his faceless, simultaneously sculptural and amorphic nudes with a model comprised of human accessories. Both symbolise human presence without being strictly representational, and create a tension wrought by the layers of artistic creation indicated by the portrait within the portrait.
A student of Parthenis at the School of Fine Art in Athens, Engonopoulos is considered the founder of surrealism in Greek art. Known for his erotic depictions of nude or partially dressed male and female figures he incorporates elements of mythology, history and antiquity within a contemporary idiom.
