Catalogue Note
The expressive character of the present work is characteristic of Triantafyllidis, with the features of the austere landscape outlined in the simplest fashion while simultaneously being imbued with spiritual resonance.
One of the most talented Greek painters of the first half of the twentieth century, Triantafyllidis adopted both Impressionist and Expressionist elements in his works. A student of Jakobides at the Athens School of Fine Art, and later of Ludwig von Löfftz at the Munich Academy and of Desiré Lucas in Paris, he returned to Greece for good in 1913. Thematically, Triantafyllidis' work encompassed depictions of scenes of everyday life, still lifes, portraits and landscapes, as well as religious subjects towards the end of his career.
