Catalogue Note
Janvier and Longchamps each sold maps in Paris and came together around 1751 to collaborate in the lavish production of wall maps for the nobility of France. This series, the culmination of their partnership, was first issued in 1754 with elaborate scenes occupying the margins of each map. Janvier went on to issue these maps without borders in 1772 and 1788.
The present examples are the later issues without the vignette scenes in the frames. The map of the western hemisphere has such an uncustomary format, with East at the top, that the publisher included an "Avertissement" in explanation.
