Condition

"The following condition report has been provided by Sarah Walden, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's. St Catherine. This painting is on a fine oak panel, which is stable and flat. There are a few small chips at the extreme edges, with one or two retouchings in the gold columns at the sides. The hem of St. Catherine's gown at lower right has some retouching and there are small retouchings at the top of the sky, and two in the immediate foreground near the base, with one minute superficial touch over a little crack on her forehead. Apart from a slightly thin place near the base in the wheel the painting is in fine intact unworn condition throughout, with unbroken glazing across the landscape and the drapery, and the head and halo also well preserved. St Agnes in Grisaille on the verso. This reverse of the panel is virtually immaculately intact, with some of the drawing slightly visible in places with the increased natural transparency of the paint, and beautiful white drapery. Occasional minute lines of surface retouching along the grain can be seen under ultra violet light, but the condition throughout is remarkably perfect in the figure and the red background. The grey framing has had successive layers of retouching. This report was not done under laboratory conditions."
