Condition
Oil on panel.
From a first hand inspection there are small vertical cracks of the support due to natural aging of the wood. There are 3 - 4 woodworms holes over the background on the right hand side and tow over the roses in the middle, moreover there are two holes in the middle along the lower edge probably due to push-pins.
The ultra violet light reveals light yellowish fluorescent varnish.
It is suggested a careful cleansing and restoration of the support.

Nella produzione di Bartolena, pittore dal carattere schivo e solitario, le nature morte sono i soggetti più ricercati nelle collezioni private. Per quanto l'opera qui presentata sia un bozzetto, il formato verticale, insolito per l'artista, è arricchito da una pennellata naturale e spontanea, che rende la pittura particolarmente vibrante, restituendo a chi guarda la freschezza delle rose.
La composizione, che si sviluppa in forma piramidale, è definita dalla diagonale che divide la zona sinistra luminosa che fa risaltare il rosso dei petali da quella destra in ombra con le foglie e gambi. L'opera, per la sua incompiutezza, risulta essere estremamente lontana dalle nature morte "ordinate" di Bartolena , ma è comunque percepibile la ricerca di equilibrio e armonia tipica del pittore.
