BIBLIOGRAFIA DI RIFERIMENTO
Art in Rome in the Eighteenth Century, catalogo della mostra, ed. E. P. Bowron e J. J. Rishel, Philadelphia Museum of Art, 2000, pp. 259-261, n. 133.

This terracotta is one of two surviving models for Maini's stucco half-lunette over the chapel of St. Francesco di Paola in S. Andrea delle Fratte, Rome, built between 1726 and 1736.  The other of similar dimensions is in the Accademia Nazionale di San Luca, Rome and was exhibited in the exhibition Art in Rome in the Eighteenth Century at the Philadelphia Museum of Art in 2000. The relief in the Accademia di San Luca is thought to have been presented by Maini on his election to the Accademia in 1728.

The relief depicts the miraculous appearance of St. Michael to St. Francesco di Paola, holding the shield inscribed Charitas, which the saint took as the emblem of his order, the Minims. The relief is part of an elaborate decorative scheme in the chapel dedicated to St. Francesco di Paola in S. Andrea delle Fratte on which Maini worked with Pietro Bracci. Although there is no documentary records of the construction of the chapel it appears that Maini did the major part of the decoration, even completing two unfinished marble putti by Bernini.

As noted by Montagu in her description of the relief exhibited in Philadelphia, Maini's composition displays the influence of his teacher, Camillo Rusconi, and is characteristic of his early work. Montagu comments that the version in Rome 'is modelled throughout with great sureness, and the high degree of finish in many of the details does not lessen its lively spontaneity'.

Maini's sculpture follows the Baroque style of Algardi, which deeply influenced his teacher Camillo Rusconi. Maini made four statues for the church of Mafra in the early 1730s and in 1733 began work on his most famous commission, the tomb of Cardinal Neri Corsini in St. John Lateran. Around this time Maini completed his second statue in the nave of St. Peter's, St. Philip Neri.
