This painting has been recently stretched onto a new stretcher and the top edge of the canvas has been reinforced to allow for proper stretching. The paint layer is unvarnished and has not been cleaned. Some cracks have developed, in the figure particularly, which have given rise to some paint losses through which shows the darker under color. At some point, although this picture is in original condition now, the painting needs to be restored and the paint layer needs to be consolidated prior to this taking place. The losses are clearly visible in isolated spots throughout the figure and in the face, and to a lesser degree in the background. This condition poses no particular issue to a good restorer, and the picture will respond very nicely.
