The canvas is slightly buckled, particularly noticeable in the mid-left section. There is a "Z" shaped scratch (about 20 inches long in total) in the lower portion of the dress and some smaller scratches and scuff marks in the same area. There is also a small 1 1/2 inch discoloration above the "Z" and a minor scratch down the length of the leg. There is a small 3 inch tear that has been repaired in the upper left corner. Catalogue Note

Katherine Campbell was a member of the Roerichs' circle, and she eventually became a trustee of the Roerich Museum in New York. Campbell was both outgoing and beautiful, and she dreamt of becoming a famous actress but was met with very little success. She frequently modeled for Svetoslav Roerich, and the two maintained a close lifelong relationship. In his portraits of Campbell, Svetoslav focused primarily on the design and texture of the clothing she wore as well as the decorative backgrounds positioned behind her.
