a russian carved ivory icon of the resurrection of Christ, Northern Russia, circa 1800

depicts the resurrection of Christ as recorded in the Gospel of Matthew 28: 2-4 in which an angel of the Lord has descended to open Christ's tomb, the angel's appearance being so bright that it rendered the Roman soldiers guarding the tomb "as dead men," above them Christ ascends in glory against an ornately carved mandorla, the whole set in a carved frame elaborately decorated with beadwork, latticework, and floral ornament.
