Description

  • unusually heavy, in the 15th century style, the face and clothing of the angel delicatedly rendered in painted and champlevé enamels and with details highlighted with foils beneath the enamel; shown half-length holding a cross and an orb, all set against a polished gilt ground; hinged, with a heavy suspension piece centered with the Mandylion, the borders of the front and back ornamented with ornate wirework in a pattern of quatrefoils and scrolls; the reverse with Cyrillic inscription in blue champlevé enamel "Holy Guardian Angel Protect Me from All Harm"
