A Gilded Silver and Enamel Personal Icon of the Guardian Angel, Ovchinnikov, Moscow, circa 1890
unusually heavy, in the 15th century style, the face and clothing of the angel delicatedly rendered in painted and champlevé enamels and with details highlighted with foils beneath the enamel; shown half-length holding a cross and an orb, all set against a polished gilt ground; hinged, with a heavy suspension piece centered with the Mandylion, the borders of the front and back ornamented with ornate wirework in a pattern of quatrefoils and scrolls; the reverse with Cyrillic inscription in blue champlevé enamel "Holy Guardian Angel Protect Me from All Harm"
