Literature

The decoration of this cup and saucer, combining Empire-style ornament with street scenes drawn from daily life, exemplifies some of the most important artistic tendencies of Russian decorative arts after the Napoleonic Wars.  For the discerning viewer, it was clear that the images on the cup and saucer were copied from one of the many lavishly illustrated volumes depicting the sorts of persons typically encountered on the streets of St. Petersburg.  The view of the woman selling old clothing and shoes is taken from Aleksandrov's illustration (no. 26) for a Torgovka in the Albom peterburgskikh tipov (Collection des cris et costumes de paysans et paysannes de St.-Pétersbourg).
