Condition

This work is painted onto a fine linen which in turn has been backed, yet not lined, on another slightly coarser waved linen. Essentially this extra linen on the reverse of the canvas acts a dust backing which seems to be un-disturbed. The paint layer is stable. There is a little cracking in the sky in the upper right and a slight scrape in the lower portion of the tent and into the ground in front of it, which seems to have a few old retouches. The scuffs around the edges, along the bottom edge and in the lower right, and in the corners are un-restored. The remainder of the picture is in beautiful condition. The picture is not expected to be receptive to cleaning, since the paint layer is very sensitive. The painting is overall in lovely condition and a few restorations would make the picture perfectly presentable. The following condition report has been provided by Simon Parkes of Simon Parkes Art Conservation, Inc. 502 East 74th St. New York, NY 212-734-3920, simonparkes@msn.com , an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's.
