Catalogue Note

The pair of figures present an exciting vignette from the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-1878. In the first, a knife-wielding Turk creeps up on a sleeping Russian sentry. Disaster is averted only because the soldier's faithful hound, hidden behind a rocky outcropping, is awoken. In the second group, the dog has sprung, awakening the sentry, who aims his rifle at the Turk's head.
