Catalogue Note
Alfred von Wierusz-Kowalski (1849-1915) achieved wide popularity for his dramatic scenes of wolves and horses in snowy, often desolate landscapes of the Russian Empire. The oil painting, A Windy Day, on which the scene on one of these plates was based, was sold for the benefit of the Brooklyn Museum by Sotheby's, New York, October 23, 2008, lot 9.
