Catalogue Note
Nil Stolbenskii was a fifteenth-century monk renowned for his feats of asceticism. In addition to strict fasting and observing silence, he refused to lay down to sleep, choosing instead to allow himself brief naps while leaning on a prop. It is this practice which the sculpture depicts.
