Catalogue Note

Icons depicting the Incredulity of Thomas began to appear in the feast day tier of Russian iconstases as early as the 15th century. This icon was probably painted for the same iconostasis as lot 225 (an icon of Christ Teaching in the Temple), but was painted by a different hand.  For other examples of the Incredulity of Thomas from feast day tiers with similar iconography, see the icon from the Church of the Holy Trinity from the Monastery of St. Paul Obnorskii by the painter Dionisii and his workshop now in the State Russian Museum, reproduced in Russkie monastyri: Iskusstvo i traditsii, St. Petersburg, 1997, p. 127, and an early 16th century example from the Ikonen Museum in Recklinghausen reproduced in Eva Haustein-Bartsch and Norbert Wolf, Icons, Cologne, 2008, pp. 50-51.
