Condition

This painting on canvasboard is in excellent condition. The paint layer is clean and probably lightly varnished and there appear to be no retouches. Despite the fact that some of the pigment in the snow fluoresces slightly strongly under ultraviolet, this seems to all be original paint. The picture should be hung as is. The following condition report has been provided by Simon Parkes of Simon Parkes Art Conservation, Inc. 502 East 74th St. New York, NY 212-734-3920, simonparkes@msn.com , an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's.

Catalogue Note

Leon Gaspard was born in Vitebsk, Russia, far from the Western-influenced urban centers of Moscow and St. Petersburg. He often accompanied his father on fur trades to Asia, and he later traveled extensively as an adult, often choosing to trek through the Siberian wilderness. These trips inspired many dynamic and vibrant canvases, including the present lot.
