Provenance

The Fire may be stylistically linked to the late 19th-century Itinerant movement, in which artists employed realist technique to evoke commentary on the state of Russian society. At center the rueful subject sits among the smoldering remains of his home, and at right the silhouette of the ruins is said to represent the face of the devil with horns.

Condition

Oil on canvas. Surface is dirty and covered with a layer of yellowed varnish. The surface has craquelure and some staining, especially in sky area. There is a 2 inch scratch in the lower right corner. Under UV restoration is visible, particularly in sky, however the varnish prevents a conclusive analysis. Held in a modern gold gilt frame. Unexamined out of frame.
