Catalogue Note

This cigarette case was likely given by either Ernst I, Duke of Saxe-Altenburg (1826-1908), who was Grand Duchess Maria Pavlovna's first cousin once removed, or Ernst II, Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha (1818-1893), who was her second cousin once removed.  Interestingly, in 1846, Ernst II abolished the 1816 law which forbade smoking on the streets of his duchy.

Both dukes were member of the Ernestine Order, the House Order of the Duchies of Saxony, which was co-founded on 25 December 1833 by Frederick, Duke of Saxe-Altenburg (1763-1834), Ernst I, Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha (1784-1844), and Bernhard II Erich Freund, Duke of Saxe-Meiningen (1800-1882), to honour their mutual ancestor, Ernst I "The Pious", Duke of Saxe-Gotha and Altenburg (1601-1675).

Haller & Rathenau, Court Jewellers to the King of Prussia, was a leading 19th century luxury goods firm founded in Berlin in 1842 by Joseph Haller and Benjamin Rathenau.
