each link formed as W opposite a crown for Wilhelm I, German Emperor (1797-1888, r. 1871-1888), set with diamonds and a sapphire, apparently unmarked

Catalogue Note

These cufflinks were possibly a gift to Grand Duke Vladimir Alexandrovich when he went, as official representative of Emperor Alexander III, to Berlin for Wilhelm's 90th birthday celebrations in 1887.  The form of the crown post-dates Wilhelm's proclamation as German Emperor in 1871.
