Description
enamelled after a photograph of Grand Duchess Maria Pavlovna, the lid with her coat of arms (see detail image on facing page), blue tinder cord, 88 standard
Catalogue Note
In 1874, Grand Duke Vladimir instructed the Chief of Heraldic Office to design a coat of arms for his new wife, Grand Duchess Maria Pavlovna (Russian State Historical Archives, f.528, op.1 d.17). The design combines elements of that of the Grand Duchy of Mecklenburg-Schwerin with that of Romanov. It was sent for approval of Emperor Alexander II on 9 February 1875.
