Catalogue Note
The configuration of the present table with its distinctive arched stretcher echoes that of one of a pair of sofa tables supplied to Stephen Tempest for Broughton Hall, illustrated in Susan E. Stuart, Gillows of Lancaster and London, 1730-1840, 2008, 2 vols., vol. I, p. 264, pl. 268. Furthermore, the brass beaded mounts follow the same pattern as the inlay on the tables at Broughton Hall. Another sofa table and a D-end games table, both by Gillows, illustrated Stuart op. cit., pp. 266-267, pls. 271 and 272, feature similar handles with star back plates.
