Description

  • 73cm. high, 117.5cm. wide; 2ft. 4 ¾in., 3ft. 10 ¼in.
the revolving top with a cloth inset decorated to simulate needlework with a central vignette of a garden featuring a viaduct, surrounded by anthemion and floral borders, the frieze with alternate real and dummy drawers, on a panelled pedestal enclosed by a single door

Provenance

Probably acquired by William, 2nd Viscount Courtenay, (1742-1788) and thence by descent.

Condition

Decoration to the top is now fairly muted. Cloth to the top with inevitable wear, age cracks. Plug holes beneath locks to drawers. Minor losses to cocked beading. One handle retaining only the back plates. Age crack to one frieze drawer. General old marks and scratches. Very good colour and patina.

Catalogue Note

The present table is rare in featuring an octagonal pedestal base as opposed to the more prevalent rectangular or cylindrical variety. Further closely related examples include a table from the collection of Charles de Beistegui, Château de Groussay, France, sold Sotheby's Château de Groussay, 2-6 June 1999, lot 1110 and another table, sold in these rooms, 6 June 2006, lot 268.
