Literature
Anon, An Inventory of the Effects at Powderham Castle in the County of Devon directed by the Will and Codicil of the Rt. Hon. William the 9th Earl of Devon to be preserved as heirlooms. November 1835 (Earl of Devon's archive, Powderham Castle, I/1/1/11)
Condition
STRUCTURE
The canvas has been lined.
PAINT SURFACE
The paiting appears to be in fair condition. There is one large area of restoration to a previous tear, in the upper left, and there is bubbling to the paint work, perhaps due to poor previous relining. There is minor paint loss to the canvas edges and a layer of surface dirt overall.
ULTRAVIOLET
Examination under utravilet light reveals a thick, discoloured and opaque varnish overall, below which it is difficult to read the painting.
FRAME
Held in an early 18th century, gilded wooden frame
