Description

  • 44cm, 17 3/8 in wide
central box with hinged cover, inscribed To The Honorable Albert Edward Delaval Astley on his 21st Birthday from the Tenants on the Melton Constable Estate November 24th 1903, reverse engraved with a crest, finial modeled as an officer of the 7th Hussars, cut-glass silver mounted inkwells, John Newton Mappin, London, 1894, each engraved with a crest on the cover, silver pen, Asprey, London, 1906

Condition

Some nuts missing from the screws holding down central Hussar figure and some scratches where horse has swivelled as a result, nuts also missing from mounts for inkwells and central box, marks pretty clear, birthday engraving pretty crisp, overall condition good, glass appears to be without cracks and obvious chips, presently with ink stains as seen in catalogue.

'A wine luncheon is to be served to the tenants to-day. Mr. W. Grix of the Oxford arms Hotel, Norwich, has erected a large marquee capable of accommodating 600 people, in which on Saturday the cottagers and the people on the estate will be entertained. A solid silver inkstand and an address will be presented to the Hon. A.E.D. Astley by the tenantry to-day.'
