Description

  • Diameter 8.2cm, 3 3/4 in
circular, with hinged lid applied with an oval enamel plaque painted with Hector's farewell to Priam, split pearl frame and border, the ground, sides and base elaborately decorated with quatrefoil and pellet paillons against translucent blue over concentric engine turning, maker's mark, charge marks, export mark, the rim numbered: 147, later French control marks

Condition

Needs a good professional clean; otherwise excellent condition. It is probable that the pearl borders have been added later as the lid rim pins have been replaced.

Catalogue Note

A circular box by Blerzy, also of 1789 but numbered: 201, with the same distinctive paillon pattern was sold, Sotheby's London, 7 June 2005, lot 33. Interestingly, the borders were of small flat simulated pearls rather than the lavish real pearls of this example which was evidently made for presentation purposes.
