Description
- 53cm. high, 92cm. deep with wrought iron brackets; 1ft. 9in., 3ft. ¼in.
with the foundry mark RE & S within a shield, including the arms of the Barony of Hastings
Provenance
Sir Jacob Astley, 6th Bt., recreated 16th Lord Hastings (1797-1859) and thence by descent.
Condition
Atmospheric and impressive. Chips to stone. There is a small bracket to the reverse of each shield, perhaps for a pennant.

The inclusion of the arms of the Barony of Hastings on this impressive pair of andirons relates to the recreation of the Barony, endowed upon Sir Jacob Astley, 6th Bt., who became the 16th Lord Hastings in 1841 and whom presumably commissioned this lot in celebration of this event.
