Probably acquired by Captain Francis Blake-Delaval (1692-1752) for Seaton Delaval and thence by descent.
Literature
Probably recorded in an inventory dated 22nd January 1755 of the contents at Seaton Delaval Hall, as either, 'Cafoy Bedroom Chamber - Japan Chest' or 'Closet of Best Room - Japan Long Box'.
Condition
In country house condition. The lacquer is of very good quality. There are chips to extremities throughout. Most notably between the two lock plates. The stand was found recently in the attic and there are signs of it having been stored for sometime. There are old marks, some pigeon dirt and traces of worm. The front of the stand is bowed. A very interesting and decorative lot.
