Description

  • Total measurement: 428cm. high, 376cm wide; 14ft., 12ft. 4in.
comprising of a panel completely worked in metal thread and polychrome silk threads, depicting a central group of three descending and ascending long profile three clawed dragons, around a flaming pearl enclosing a Shou character, symbolic of longevity, with a further pair of small dragons above and below, all on a cloud embroidered background sprinkled with finely embroidered small symbolic motifs of standing figures of immortals, and two figures in a boat, the male wearing armour, a musical instrument (biwa), tiger decorated ceramic container, floral and foliate sprigs, animals (Shishi) and birds (peacock and pair of cockerels), with further applied triangular corners worked with separate detailed motifs of a tiger, mythical beast, peony and pair of Immortals, all respectively on various grounds, the whole within a four-sided golden coloured silk damask border (distressed condition)

Condition

Total measurement: 428cm. high, 376cm wide; 14ft., 12ft. 4in. (including border) Measurement of central panel only: 376cm. high, 233cm. wide; 12ft. 4in., 7ft. 7in. Border (approx. 27cm. wide each side) in distressed condition, brittle, discoloured and with numerous splits. Two large sections lacking, showing the support textile beneath. Long splits resulting in section coming away from the central panel. Panel is lined overall with hessian, which is stained. Recommend attention given to future hanging options. Perhaps without the outer border. Central panel: Faded, some loose threads. Dirty. In need of some attention. Wonderful details to motifs.
