Description

  • 182cm. high, 110cm. wide; 5ft. 11¾in., 3ft. 7¼in.
the scroll pediment above a pierced leaf-carved frieze, the replaced plate within a foliate and paterae carved border with trailing foliage to the sides, with a shaped shell-carved apron below, later painted 

Provenance

Probably acquired by Sir William Courtenay, 3rd Bt. and later 1st Viscount Courtenay (1710-1762) and thence by descent.

Condition

Good general condition. Plate replaced and later painted as stated in the catalogue. There is a section of carved moulding missing from the top left hand side. The pediment has age cracks. The swan-neck pediment possibly originally centred by a cartouche shaped crest. General minor separation to construction joins to frame. Left hand carved pedant flanking frame possibly a later replacement. Minor reparir to a leaf scroll to tip flanking rt side of shell to apron. Rough surface to the background to the carved decoration, was possibly originally gessoed with punched ground. lovely scale and carved detail.
