Le négatif est en bon état de conservation général. Avec une petite déchirure ancienne au coin inférieur droit et une tâche minuscule au milieu vers la droite. Le tirage est en bon état de conservation, avec un pli au coin droit inférieur (datant d'avant montage), quelques oxydations dans les parties sombres et avec quelques taches le long du bord gauche. Le négatif et le tirage ont une faible tache (chimique) dans la partie haute. The negative is generally in very good condition. There is a small old tear at the bottom right corner and one tiny stain in the middle area at right. The print is in good condition, with a fold across the lower right corner (prior to mounting), some oxidation in the dark areas and a few dots of staining along the left edge. With a faint stain (chemical) on the negative and the print in the upper area.

Ce portrait d'un scientifique est attribué, dans Louis Robert, L'alchimie des images, 1999, à Louis Robert. Cependant, en comparant cette image à quelques portraits parmi les plus célèbres photographiés par Victor Regnault, notamment Portrait of an Unknown Man (André Jammes/ Eugenia Parry Janis, The Art of French Calotype, with a critical dictionary of photographers 1845-1870, Princeton 1983, pl. V) et The sons of the photographer (Jammes/ Janis, 1983, pl. IV), il est évident que la même chaise fut utilisée pour ces trois poses. Une attribution à Victor Regnault semble très probable.
