Description

  • Paul Outerbridge, Jr.
  • APPLE WITH GINGER JAR
circa 1922 (Singular Aesthetic, pl. 112; Taschen, p. 43)

Condition

The page references cited in our catalogue entry (Singular Aesthetic, pl. 112; Taschen, p. 43) illustrate a close variant of the photograph offered here. This photograph is on double-weight paper with a matte surface. Aside from some faint soiling visible only in the margins, this print is in excellent condition. Sotheby's catalogue illustration shows the entire image, which likely represents the entirety of the negative. Outerbridge has put cropping marks, in pencil in the lower and right margins, indicating how the image was to be matted or reproduced. This tighter cropping, similar to that of the variant image in the page references cited above, yields a concise image with a more dynamic interplay of shapes and tonal values. The faint white spots visible in the upper left portion of the image are concealed by Outerbridge's prescribed cropping.
