Description

  • Alvin Langdon Coburn
  • 'NEW YORK'
(London: Duckworth & Co., and New York: Brentano's, 1909), a volume of 20 tipped-in, hand-pulled photogravures by COBURN, with an introduction by H. G. Wells.  Folio, one-quarter leather, gilt-lettered boards (Truthful Lens 36)

Condition

This copy of Coburn's 'New York' is in fine overall condition. The photogravures are all in an excellent state of preservation. On one plate, 'The Singer Building, Twilight,' a faint irregular white line in the lower left quadrant is visible under close inspection: this is likely due to a particle trapped between plate and paper during the printing process. This is not a physical defect in the plate, and is not immediately apparent. The covers are very fresh-looking – a rarity for this book. And the binding is tight. The volume is housed in a modern custom-made folding brown linen clamshell box with a gilt-lettered leather title label on the spine. The plates are as follows: The Metropolitan Tower Brooklyn Bridge, From a Rooftop The Battery Williamsburg Bridge The Holland House Broadway at Night Brooklyn Bridge, From the River The Flat-Iron The Water Front The Singer Building, Noon The Ferry The Tunnel-Builders The Knickerbocker Trust Company The Chinese Quarter The Unfinished Bridge The Singer Building, Twilight The Stock Exchange Fifth Avenue, From the St. Regis The Sky-Line The Park Row Building
