Description

  • Walker Evans
  • 42ND STREET AND 6TH AVENUE
flush-mounted to card, signed in pencil on the reverse, tipped to a modern mount, framed, 1929 (Keller 94; American Photographs, Part 2, pl. 19)

Provenance

Sotheby's New York, 23 April 1994, Sale 6551, Lot 111

Condition

This striking warm-toned early print is flush-mounted and appears to have been removed from another mount. Its removal is likely the cause of the fine parallel creasing that is visible in raking light. These creases are not visible at a normal viewing distance. The abrasions on the reverse are also the result of removal from another mount. When examined with a black light, this print does not appear to fluoresce. We believe this to be an early print based on its appearance. In addition, when this print was offered in 1993, we received information at the time regarding the printing date, when it was listed as having been printed in 1932. Unfortunately, records for that sale were destroyed in a warehouse fire.
In response to your inquiry, we are pleased to provide you with a general report of the condition of the property described above. Since we are not professional conservators or restorers, we urge you to consult with a restorer or conservator of your choice who will be better able to provide a detailed, professional report.
