Description

  • Walker Evans
  • CHURCH ORGAN AND PEWS
signed in pencil and with the photographer's Old Lyme studio stamp (Keller K) on the reverse, signed on the mat, 1936, probably printed in the 1970s (Keller 530)

Condition

This contact print, on medium-weight paper and hinged with linen tape to its original mat, is in generally excellent condition. There are 4 small crimped impressions in the corners of the margin, likely from clips used during processing, and the edges and corners of the print are lightly chipped or bumped. In the lower right corner of the image, there is a tiny diagonal indentation that does not break the emulsion. The top margin is slightly rippled. When examined under a black light, this print does not appear to fluoresce. Judith Keller's book, 'Walker Evans: The Getty Museum Collection,' publishes the most comprehensive list to date of the studio and signature stamps Evans used throughout his career. The stamp reads 'Box 310 Rte. Old Lyme. Conn. 06371.' The author's assessment of the use dates of stamp K on the reverse of this print is 1966 to 1975.
