Description

  • Paul Strand
  • 'GIRL - TENANCINGO MEXICO'
flush-mounted, 1933; accompanied by the original paper mount, signed, titled, dated, and annotated in pencil

Condition

This early, warm-toned print, hinged to a modern mat, is in very good condition. As is typical of Strand's work of the period, the print's surface sheen is the result of a coating, possibly wax or varnish, that Strand favored in order to enhance the details of the image. Upon very close examination, a faint cracklure in the coating is visible throughout, as well as 2 tiny abrasions that have been retouched, in the lower left quadrant and center right of the image. Visible in raking light are 3 tiny deposits of a light, matte substance on or near the sitter's face. There is some edge chipping, most notably at the lower right. On the reverse are adhesive remains along the flush-mount's edges. The original paper mount has graphite-colored soiling outlining the photograph's original position on the mount. There are also light rust-colored droplets in the lower right quadrant of the paper. There are various small tears and creases, as well as 2 small remnants of linen tape. The annotation '134 W. 4th ST New York (12)' is in pencil in another hand.
