Description

  • Bill Brandt
  • 'THE RIVER EAST OF TOWER BRIDGE, AT ''CHARLIE BROWN'S,'' LIMEHOUSE'
titled in ink in the margin, numbered '7' in ink and with the photographer's '58, Hillfield Court, Belsize Avenue, London, N. W. 3.' studio stamp on the reverse, 1945 (Behind the Camera, p. 17; The Photography of Bill Brandt, pl. 48)

Provenance

Acquired from Edwynn Houk Gallery, Chicago, 1987

Condition

The photograph is in quite good condition. When it is examined closely in raking light, one can see a number of faint and inconsequential handling creases, none of which breaks the emulsion. There is a well-defined 3/4-inch linear indentation near the top edge of the image. None of these issues detract from the print's overwhelmingly fine appearance. As is typical of Brandt's early photographs, this print is on single-weight paper which has a semi-glossy surface. Brandt left an approximately one-inch white border at the bottom only, and this is where he has written his extensive title. Also typical of his early printing style, this perfectly-rendered image is relatively low in contrast – in the 1960s and continuing into the1970s, Brandt printed his images with progressively higher contrast. When this print is viewed under ultraviolet light, it does not appear to fluoresce.
