Catalogue Note
This photograph, printed by August Sander's son, Gunther, dates from the early days of the posthumous commercial production of Sander's images. Originally purchased in December 1973 through Light Impressions, in Rochester, N. Y., the print almost certainly constituted a special order, as Gunther only made prints of his father's images upon request at that time. As is typical for prints made during this early period, it is not signed by Gunther, although it bears August Sander's 'Köln-Lindenthal' blindstamp in the margin. Gunther did not begin signing the photographs he printed from his father's negatives until 1978, when he was urged to do so by his son, Gerd Sander.
