- 'THE BLIND POET BELIEVES THAT HE IS THE EMPEROR OF CHINA' (JEAN COCTEAU WITH BIRDS)
mounted to black board, signed in white ink and with a typed title on the mount, the photographer's copyright and '33 West 67th Street, New York 23, N. Y., Endicott 2-9670' studio stamps on the reverse, framed, 1949 (Retrospective, p. 40)
Provenance
Acquired from Light Gallery, New York
Condition
This rare early print is in generally good to very good condition. In the lower right quadrant are several indentations that do not break the emulsion. Visible in raking light are the following: original retouching throughout, most noticeably in the floor and in the upper wall in the image; and faint, random surface scuffs along the left side of the print. Minor edge chipping is barely noticeable along the top of the print.
The black mount exhibits several losses to the corners and edges, which are not visible when the print is viewed in its mat. There is a tack hole in the upper right corner and a tear in the title label in the center.
On the reverse of the mount, graphite soiling is visible, and there are handling fingerprints along the edges. There are remains of 2 ½-inch tape hinges on the reverse at the upper edge of the mount.
