Description

  • Brassaï
  • PONT DE LA SEINE
ferrotyped, the photographer's '81, Rue du Faubourg Saint-Jacques, Paris-XIV, Port-Royal 23-42' studio stamp, a customs stamp, and numbered in ink on the reverse, 1930s, probably printed in the 1950s or 1960s (Eye of Paris, pl. 24 and back cover)

Provenance

Gift of the photographer to the present owner, 1970s

Condition

This ferrotyped print, on very glossy, medium-weight paper, is in generally excellent condition. In raking light, a scattering of light surface scratches and soft handling creases, most noticeably in the top center and bottom left corner of the image, are visible. Common in Brassaï's prints, various tiny deposits of original retouching are also visible. On the reverse are the following: 4 1-inch long triangular remnants of cellulose tape in the corners, graphite-colored light soiling and fingerprints at the periphery of the print; '68.1450' and 'TR1627.95' in pencil, partially erased; and 'N.566.M+1,' '95' (circled), and '92' (circled and crossed out) in ink. When examined with a black light, this print appears to fluoresce.
