Description

  • Berenice Abbott
  • '"EL" 2ND AND 3RD AVENUE LINES: BOWERY AND DIVISION STREET, MANHATTAN'
the photographer's Federal Art Project and Commerce St. stamps on the reverse, 1936

Literature

New York in the Thirties, pl. 22; Yochelson, Lower East Side, pl. 6; O'Neal, p. 97

Condition

This early, slightly warm-toned print, on double-weight paper with a slight surface sheen and pebbled texture, is in generally excellent condition. The edges and corners of the print are lightly rubbed and chipped. There are 2 ½-inch linear indentations in the lower left and right margin edge that do not break the emulsion. Near the bottom edge of the image are 2 pinpoint-sized losses to the top layer of emulsion. None of these affects the overall quality of the print.
In response to your inquiry, we are pleased to provide you with a general report of the condition of the property described above. Since we are not professional conservators or restorers, we urge you to consult with a restorer or conservator of your choice who will be better able to provide a detailed, professional report. Prospective buyers should inspect each lot to satisfy themselves as to condition and must understand that any statement made by Sotheby's is merely a subjective qualified opinion.
